In 2009 Ukrainian national team becomes the world`s football champion… No, it is not the creative flight of imagination of the authors of the project, it is a real, but an almost unknown fact: it was the victory of our boys that ended the world championship in street football among the homeless in Milan. This championship is hold annually since 2003 and is officially supported by UN Commissioner for Sports, UEFA charity fund, international street press network (INSP), Nike and «Manchester United» and «Real Madrid» football clubs. The main purpose of the football championship among homeless – integration through sport those, who are in a crisis. The organisers think that in this way society begins to see homeless people and vagrants as people and be more humane towards them. According to their statistics more than 70% of players have changed their life for the better forever… The fact of the Ukrainian team`s victory became the basis of the script for «Backstreet Champions». Since the authors did not aim for a documentary reconstruction of the events, it is clear that the main characters and some dramatic moments are fictional. However, real people became heroes prototypes, and as a basis of plot twists – real situations. Myhalych is a former famous player of a famous football team, which experiences not the best times, tries to form the team for a world football championship among homeless. He is driven not only by the love for sport, rather the need to move break through the «dead end», into which the life has driven him. And also – an attempt to help the boys who ended up just on the street. This way, the team includes «always together» Styopa and Bohdan, who stick together and have been friends since the orphanage. Gloomy – a character, who tries to get away from criminal past. And Maksym, who is the opposite – from a «decent» family, that lives by the rules of earning. He is educated and could have everything he wanted, but the absence of main things – attention and love – lead the guy to drugs.
